Staple Plain
Somerset
Staple Plain sits on the open heathland of the Quantock Hills in Somerset, a broad expanse of heather, gorse and bracken-covered ground crossed by wide tracks that feel spacious and uncomplicated. This 5.6km circuit follows the main tracks across the heath with views extending to the Bristol Channel and Exmoor, rising gently to higher ground before dropping back to the start. The Quantocks have a quiet, understated character, less dramatic than Exmoor or Dartmoor but with a gentle beauty that rewards repeated visits. Multiple branching paths make it easy to adapt the route. With 119 metres of gentle climbing, the terrain is accessible throughout.
Off-lead potential on this dog friendly walk is limited as cattle and ponies graze the open common throughout the year, and dogs must be kept under close control at all times. The heath carries rich scent from heather and gorse, and the open ground gives clear sightlines. The exposed position means the walk catches wind from the Bristol Channel, which can be bracing in winter. Water sources are scarce on the dry heath, so carry a supply. Parking is available at the Staple Plain car park on the ridge road. The Quantock villages below have dog-friendly pubs, including the Carew Arms at Crowcombe. A calm, open walk that works as a gentle introduction to the Quantock Hills.

Frequently Asked Questions
Staple Plain is a decent option for a dog walk, earning a 7 out of 10 on our dog friendly rating. The wide, open tracks across the Quantock heathland give plenty of space to roam, and the rich scents from heather and gorse make it a stimulating outing for most dogs. It's worth being aware of a few practical considerations before you go, particularly around livestock and water.
Off-lead freedom is limited at Staple Plain. Cattle and ponies graze the open common throughout the year, so dogs need to be kept under close control at all times. That said, the clear sightlines across the heath do make it easier to keep an eye on your dog and manage any encounters.
The most important things to plan for are water and the weather , the dry heath has very few water sources, so bring your own supply for your dog, and the exposed ridge position means it can be genuinely bracing in winter wind off the Bristol Channel. There are no facilities on site, so come prepared. On a more positive note, free parking is available at Staple Plain car park on the ridge road, and if you fancy a post-walk drink, the Carew Arms at nearby Crowcombe is dog friendly.
