Arun Valley Path
East Sussex
The Arun Valley Path follows the river downstream from Arundel through water meadows and wetlands that flood in winter and hum with insect life in summer. This 8.9 km circular stays low and flat throughout, tracing the riverbank where herons stand motionless and kingfishers flash between overhanging willows, before looping back through grazing fields with the castle visible on the skyline behind. The landscape is open, quiet, and unhurried, a proper contrast to the chalk downland routes that dominate this part of Sussex. With only 50 m of climbing across the whole circuit, the going is as gentle as the scenery.
This is an excellent dog friendly walk for owners who want riverside access without hills. The Arun is shallow and slow-moving along much of this stretch, giving dogs easy water access for wading and cooling off. The meadow sections carry rich, damp scent that keeps noses busy, and the birdlife along the river provides constant visual interest. Some fields are grazed by cattle and sheep, so leads are needed in places and awareness of livestock is important throughout. The flat, soft paths suit older dogs or those building fitness back up after rest. A calm, restorative walk that delivers more than its modest stats suggest.

Frequently Asked Questions
Arun Valley Path is a solid choice for dogs, earning a 7 out of 10 on our dog friendly rating. The route offers easy river access along much of the Arun, where the water is shallow and slow-moving , ideal for a wade or a cool-down , and the damp meadow sections are rich with scent. The flat, soft terrain also makes it a particularly good option for older dogs or those easing back into exercise.
Dogs will need to go on lead in sections where fields are grazed by cattle and sheep, so awareness of livestock is important throughout the walk. Outside of those areas there is open space to enjoy, but given livestock is present across parts of the route, it's worth keeping a close eye on your dog and being ready to clip the lead on quickly.
The route is an 8.9 km circular with only around 50 m of elevation gain, so it's an easy, unhurried outing rather than a workout. The meadows and wetlands can flood in winter, so conditions underfoot may be wet and muddy depending on the time of year. Parking is available at Mill Road car park (BN18 9PA), but it's worth arriving before 11am at weekends to be sure of a space, with Arundel town facilities and toilets nearby.
