Attingham Park
Shropshire
Attingham Park is a National Trust estate outside Shrewsbury where 200 acres of eighteenth-century parkland surround a Palladian mansion on the banks of the River Tern. The 8 km circuit follows estate paths through open parkland dotted with veteran oaks and cedars, along the river where it bends through the grounds, and into the deer park where fallow deer graze in plain sight. The landscape is designed rather than wild, with long sight lines, composed tree groupings, and the mansion providing a focal point. The going is flat and easy throughout, with only 52 m of total climbing across the full circuit.
For dogs and their owners this is a dog friendly walk that suits quieter outings and gentler days. The river provides water access along the lower sections, and the parkland offers soft ground and good shade under the mature trees. However, livestock grazing is present across much of the estate, including the deer park, so leads are required for most of the route and dogs need to be steady around animals. The wide, maintained paths handle wet weather well and suit dogs of all sizes. The mix of open grassland and riverside stretches provides enough variety to hold interest despite the gentle terrain. A civilised walk rather than an adventurous one, with tea rooms at the mansion to finish.
