Avon Heath Country Park Walks
Dorset
Avon Heath Country Park sits inland from the Dorset coast between Ringwood and Ferndown, covering a large area of lowland heath, pine plantation and mixed woodland connected by sandy tracks. The 7 km circuit crosses open heathland where gorse blazes yellow in spring, passes through quiet pine forest where the ground is soft with fallen needles, and skirts patches of bog and wet heath that attract dragonflies in summer. The terrain is flat and the paths are easy to follow, but the landscape has a wilder, more open character than typical woodland walks. The heath is managed for conservation, supporting populations of Dartford warblers, sand lizards and smooth snakes.
Dogs get a genuinely engaging dog friendly walk here. The sandy, springy ground is kind on joints, and the mix of open heath and enclosed pine forest provides constant changes in scent and light. Off-lead potential is high across much of the route where the heathland is open and visibility is good. However, ground-nesting birds use the heath during breeding season and livestock grazing occurs in some areas, so seasonal lead requirements should be checked at the entrance. The pine sections are particularly good on hot days, offering deep shade and cooler air. Carrying water is sensible as there is limited natural water access on the route.

Frequently Asked Questions
Avon Heath Country Park is a genuinely good spot for dogs, earning a 7/10 on our dog friendly rating. The sandy, springy tracks are easy on paws and joints, and the mix of open heathland and shaded pine forest makes for an engaging walk with plenty of varied scents and terrain. Facilities at the visitor centre include a café and toilets, and parking is free.
Off-lead potential is high across much of the route, particularly on the open heathland sections where visibility is good and space is plentiful. That said, the heath supports ground-nesting birds during breeding season and livestock grazing takes place in some areas, so it's worth checking the notices at the entrance for any seasonal lead requirements before you let your dog run free.
The most important thing to pack is water , there's limited natural water access along the 7 km route, so bring enough for both you and your dog. The pine forest sections offer excellent shade on hot days, but the open heathland can be exposed. The park is managed for conservation, with rare species like sand lizards, smooth snakes and Dartford warblers present, so keeping an eye on your dog in sensitive areas is appreciated.
