Chobham Common Heathland Trail
Surrey
Chobham Common is one of the largest surviving areas of lowland heath in Surrey, a National Nature Reserve of sandy paths, gorse thickets and open heather stretching across flat terrain with long sightlines in every direction. This 7.2 km circuit follows sandy tracks through the heath, passing between stands of birch and pine that break up the open ground without enclosing it. The 46 m of climbing is negligible, and the terrain is consistently flat and easy underfoot, with the sandy paths draining well in all weather. The common supports populations of Dartford warbler, woodlark and various reptiles, and the landscape has a spacious, quiet quality that feels far removed from the surrounding commuter belt.
This is a dog friendly walk with outstanding off-lead potential. The open, flat terrain with good visibility makes this ideal for dogs who need space to run, and the absence of livestock across most of the common means dogs with reliable recall can enjoy genuine freedom. The sandy ground is kind on joints, and the gorse and heather provide rich scent interest that keeps dogs engaged. Seasonal ground-nesting bird restrictions may apply, so checking signage at the entrance is worthwhile during breeding season. The heath is exposed with no shelter from sun or rain, so this walk suits fair days or at least days when you're prepared for the elements. Parking is available at Staple Hill car park.
