Wenlock Edge

Shropshire

Dog Friendly Rating: 8/10 A walk along the famous limestone escarpment of Wenlock Edge through ancient woodland, with dappled light and historic views.

Wenlock Edge is a long limestone escarpment running through central Shropshire, cloaked in ancient woodland that has grown undisturbed on the thin soils for centuries. The 11.3 km circuit follows narrow paths and forest tracks along the ridge, moving through a landscape defined by atmosphere rather than open panoramas — the canopy closes overhead, exposed roots and limestone outcrops break through the leaf litter, and the dappled light shifts constantly as the path winds between clearings and dense cover. The limestone creates a distinctive ecology with wild garlic, dog's mercury and hart's tongue fern thriving in the alkaline soil. The 183 metres of climbing is gentle and spread evenly, making this an easy grade despite the distance. Views emerge occasionally through gaps in the trees, looking across the Ape Dale to the west.

This dog friendly walk has limited off-lead potential due to moderate livestock presence in the fields bordering the woodland, so leads are needed at field crossings and gates. The woodland sections themselves are better — enclosed paths with good sightlines and low ground-level hazards. The ancient woodland floor carries intense scent from limestone-loving plants, particularly in spring when wild garlic fills the air and bluebells carpet the clearings. The uneven ground — exposed roots, loose stone, seasonal leaf cover — keeps dogs physically engaged, and the changing character between dense canopy and open clearing maintains mental interest. Parking is available at several points along the Edge. A walk that rewards patience and a slower pace.
