Dimmingsdale Valley
Staffordshire
Dimmingsdale Valley is a narrow, wooded gorge cut by a small stream in the Churnet Valley near Alton in Staffordshire. This 5.6 km circuit follows winding paths through dense tree cover along the valley floor, crossing the stream at several points and climbing gently onto the valley sides where the woodland opens slightly. The 118 m of climbing is spread evenly, and the terrain is soft and earthy underfoot with exposed roots and muddy sections adding texture. The enclosed atmosphere is the defining quality here: the canopy closes overhead, the air is cool and damp, and the sound of the stream provides a constant backdrop. It is one of Staffordshire's most peaceful walking spots, particularly outside peak weekends.
This is a dog friendly walk that excels in atmosphere rather than drama. The valley floor carries rich, damp scent from moss-covered rock, wet earth and decaying leaf litter, and the stream provides water access and investigation opportunities throughout. Off-lead potential is moderate through the woodland where livestock are absent, and the enclosed paths and valley walls make it difficult for dogs to stray far. The shaded setting makes this an excellent choice on warmer days when more exposed walks are uncomfortable, and the soft ground suits dogs who prefer natural terrain. The muddy sections are inevitable after rain, so this is a walk for dogs and owners who don't mind getting dirty. A quiet, immersive outing that rewards patience and attention.

Frequently Asked Questions
Dimmingsdale Valley is a great choice for a dog walk, earning a solid 8 out of 10 for dog friendliness. The wooded valley floor is rich with scent from moss, wet earth and leaf litter, and the stream running through offers dogs plenty of opportunities to drink and explore along the way. The shaded, enclosed setting also makes it a particularly good option on warmer days when more exposed walks can feel uncomfortable.
Off-lead potential is moderate here , the woodland sections are free of livestock, and the enclosed valley paths and steep sides naturally limit how far dogs can wander. It's a reasonably relaxed environment for dogs who are recall-reliable, though the winding terrain means you won't always have a clear line of sight ahead.
The main thing to be prepared for is mud , the soft, earthy paths and stream crossings make muddy paws (and legs, and possibly owners) pretty much inevitable after rain, so come dressed accordingly. There are no facilities on site, so bring your own water and waste bags. Parking is available at a small car park at Dimmingsdale, and the circuit covers 5.6 km with a gentle 118 m of climbing spread throughout.
