Cotswold Way: Birdlip to Painswick
Gloucestershire
This 12 km section of the Cotswold Way from Birdlip to Painswick follows the escarpment through some of the finest beech woodland and high grassland in the Cotswolds. The route climbs from Birdlip through dense beech hangers where the canopy creates intimate, filtered-light spaces between grey-barked trunks, then breaks onto open ridges where the views expand dramatically across the Severn Valley to the Welsh hills. The underlying Jurassic limestone creates the gentle rolling topography that defines the Cotswolds at their best. The descent into Painswick reveals St Mary's Church with its famous clipped yew trees. The 180 m of climbing is concentrated in the earlier sections, with the walk becoming more open and exposed as it progresses.
This is a dog friendly walk that demands proper fitness from both dog and owner over its 12 km length. The beech woodland sections carry rich leaf-litter scent and provide excellent walking in filtered shade, while the open ridge sections give dogs wind, space and views. Off-lead potential is moderate through the woodland where recall is reliable, though sheep graze some sections of open grassland and leads are necessary where livestock are present. Water is scarce on this ridge route, so carrying supplies is essential. The variety of enclosed woodland and exposed ridgetop gives the walk two distinct characters that keep both dog and owner engaged. Painswick offers excellent post-walk refreshments, with the Falcon Inn and several tearooms welcoming dogs.
