Dundry Hill And Maes Knoll Circular From Dundry Village
Somerset
Dundry Hill rises south of Bristol, and this 10.9 km circular from the village climbs steadily onto the exposed ridge before reaching Maes Knoll, an Iron Age hillfort with expansive views across Somerset and, on clear days, to the Welsh mountains beyond. The 552 m of cumulative climbing is substantial and makes this a properly demanding walk, with the terrain crossing open fields, farm tracks and exposed hillside where there is very little shelter. The route leaves the village quickly and replaces suburban surroundings with open countryside where the sense of space and quiet increases with every metre gained. The hillfort at Maes Knoll retains its earthwork ramparts and provides a dramatic destination.
This is a dog friendly walk that demands proper fitness from both dog and owner. The open hillside provides wind and scent from the surrounding farmland, and the exposed ridge gives dogs the kind of elevated, airy terrain that many breeds respond to with enthusiasm. Off-lead potential is limited as livestock graze the surrounding fields, so leads should be carried and used throughout where animals are present. The very exposed nature of the ridge means weather conditions should be checked carefully before setting out, as there is nowhere to shelter in poor conditions. There is no water access on the route, so carrying water is essential. The reward for the sustained effort is genuine elevation, proper views and the atmosphere of an ancient hillfort at the summit. Roadside parking is available in Dundry village.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, this is a dog friendly walk with a rating of 8 out of 10. It's a genuinely rewarding route for dogs who enjoy open, elevated terrain , the exposed ridge and hillfort at Maes Knoll offer plenty of wind, scent and space that many dogs take to enthusiastically. That said, the 10.9 km distance and 552 m of cumulative climbing mean it's best suited to fit, active dogs rather than puppies or older dogs who struggle with sustained effort.
Off-lead opportunities are limited on this route, as livestock graze the surrounding fields throughout much of the walk. You should carry a lead and keep your dog on it wherever animals are present, which is likely to be for significant stretches of the route. The open hillside does offer a sense of freedom and space, but responsible on-lead walking is the expectation here.
There are two practical essentials to plan for: there is no water access on the route, so carry enough for both you and your dog, and the ridge is fully exposed with no shelter, so check the weather carefully before you set out. The climb is substantial, so this walk deserves to be treated as a proper day out rather than a casual stroll. Roadside parking is available in Dundry village, with the postcode BS41 8LQ for Downs Road car park.
