Bernwood Forest and Oakley Wood
Buckinghamshire
Bernwood Forest is a remnant of the ancient Royal Forest of Bernwood, straddling the Buckinghamshire-Oxfordshire border east of Bicester and managed jointly by Forestry England and the Woodland Trust. This 7.3 km circular follows broad forest rides through some of the oldest oak stands in the county, passing through areas where the canopy is dense and cathedral-like before opening onto wider rides where light reaches the woodland floor. The ancient oaks carry genuine presence, and the quieter margins of the forest are regularly used by deer, woodcock and, in spring, nightingale. The terrain is flat throughout with only 73 m of climbing, and the paths are soft underfoot in wet weather.
Dogs thrive on this dog friendly walk thanks to the deep, complex scent environment that ancient woodland produces. The forest floor carries layers of oak leaf litter, fungal growth and damp earth, and strong deer scent lines run through the rides that dogs register immediately. Off-lead potential is moderate, with good stretches through the quieter sections where livestock are absent and the wide rides give clear visibility. The soft, natural paths suit dogs who prefer earth and leaf to tarmac, though the ground can be heavy after prolonged rain. A proper woodland walk with genuine character, well suited to dogs who enjoy working their noses through rich, undisturbed habitat.
