Craigellachie Viewpoint (Aviemore)

Craigellachie is a birch-covered crag rising steeply above Aviemore, a National Nature Reserve where native woodland and exposed rock combine in a compact but rewarding 4.8 km circuit. The route climbs through silver birch and juniper on well-maintained paths before reaching the viewpoint where the panorama opens across Aviemore to the Cairngorm plateau and the Spey valley below. The 180 m of ascent is concentrated on the main climb, making this feel like a proper hill walk despite the short distance. The birchwood is particularly beautiful in autumn when the leaves turn gold, and the reserve supports populations of peregrine falcon and various woodland birds.

This is a dog friendly walk that delivers a genuine Highlands experience within minutes of Aviemore's main street. The birch woodland carries distinctive light, clean scent quite different from the conifer forests that surround it, and the open rock sections at the viewpoint give dogs wind and exposure. Off-lead potential is high as livestock are largely absent from the reserve, and the woodland paths are well defined with good visibility. The steep sections demand reasonable fitness but the short distance means most dogs manage it with enthusiasm. Streams in the lower woodland provide water access on the ascent. A walk that punches well above its modest stats, with the views from the top and the quality of the native birchwood making it one of the best short outings in the Cairngorms area.
