Elterwater to Skelwith Bridge (Langdale Valley)

This 5 km walk follows the Great Langdale Beck and the River Brathay between the village of Elterwater and Skelwith Bridge, passing through open meadow, mixed woodland and riverside flats in the heart of the Langdale Valley. Skelwith Force waterfall provides a dramatic highlight near the Skelwith Bridge end, where the full volume of the river drops over a rocky ledge. The route is largely flat with just 60 m of climbing, and the paths are well signed and easy to follow throughout. The Langdale Pikes provide a spectacular mountain backdrop without requiring any of the effort of climbing them.

This is a dog friendly walk that combines easy terrain with some of the Lake District's finest riverside scenery. The river carries a cool, mossy scent throughout, and water access is excellent along the Brathay, with shallow pools and gravel banks ideal for wading and paddling. Off-lead potential is high along the open riverside stretches, though leads are needed through Elterwater village and near farmland where the path passes close to grazing fields. The meadow sections carry the scent of recent grazing and seasonal wildflowers. The gentle terrain suits dogs of all ages and sizes, and the short distance makes this ideal as a half-day with a cafe stop at either end. A relaxed, beautiful walk that works for both first-time visitors and regulars.
