Embleton Bay

Embleton Bay stretches below the ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle on the Northumberland coast, a wide sweep of sand backed by dunes and low grassland where the big-sky feeling that defines this coastline is immediate. This 8 km circuit from Dunstan Steads combines the beach with gentle paths through the dunes and along the clifftop, with the castle providing a dramatic focal point throughout. The 25 m of climbing is negligible, and the terrain is easy on sand, dune grass and well-worn coastal paths. The bay feels quieter than the more famous Northumberland beaches, with a sense of space and remoteness that persists even on busier days.

This is a dog friendly walk with outstanding off-lead potential on the wide, open sand. The beach provides unrestricted running space year-round, and the dune system offers sheltered walking when the wind is strong on the exposed strand. The coastal scent from salt air, kelp and tidal deposits keeps dogs working, and the firm sand at low tide is excellent for longer runs. Livestock are largely absent from the coastal strip, making lead-free walking straightforward for dogs with reliable recall. The combination of beach, dunes and castle views gives the walk more character than a simple beach outing. A walk that showcases Northumberland's coast at its most expansive and atmospheric.
