Cheddar Gorge Outer Woodland Loop
Somerset
This 13.7 km circuit takes the high road above Cheddar Gorge, following quieter woodland and downland paths along the gorge rim rather than the busy tourist road below. The route delivers dramatic views down into the limestone gorge from above, with the sheer cliffs and wooded slopes visible from a perspective most visitors never see. The walking crosses mixed terrain of woodland tracks, rocky paths and exposed chalk grassland, with 374 m of sustained climbing making this one of the more demanding walks in the Mendip Hills. The outer loop circles the full extent of the gorge through quieter countryside before returning along the rim.
This is a dog friendly walk for fit dogs and owners who want the drama of Cheddar Gorge without the crowds. The woodland sections carry rich scent from limestone-loving flora and mature tree cover, while the open downland provides wind and views. Off-lead potential is limited as livestock graze the surrounding grassland and the cliff edges are unfenced in places with serious drops, so leads are essential near exposed sections and where sheep are present. The rocky paths can be rough underfoot and the sustained climbing demands reasonable fitness from both dog and owner. There is limited water access on the route, so carrying water is important. A walk that rewards effort with spectacular scenery and a genuine sense of achievement. Parking is available at the upper gorge car parks.
