Cwm Idwal and Devil’s Kitchen

Cwm Idwal is one of the most dramatic mountain cirques in Wales, and this 8 km route extends the classic lake circuit by climbing into the Devil's Kitchen, the dark cleft in the cliff face above the southern end of Llyn Idwal. The path from the Ogwen car park follows a well-made track to the lake before steepening sharply as it approaches Twll Du, where the route becomes rocky, narrow and demanding, with loose and sometimes wet stone requiring careful foot placement. The 400 m of ascent includes the lake circuit's gentler lower section and the more serious upper climb into the Kitchen itself. On clear days the views back down over Llyn Idwal and the Ogwen Valley are among the finest in Snowdonia.

This is a dog friendly walk for fit, confident mountain dogs and experienced owners only. The lower cwm carries the cool mineral smell of wet rock and glacial moraine, but the atmosphere becomes more austere as the path narrows and the cliffs close in above. Dogs must remain on leads throughout as required by the National Trust, and the upper sections demand sure-footedness and comfort with exposure on steep, loose ground. There is no swimming access on this route. This is a serious mountain environment and not suitable for older dogs, those with joint issues, or dogs prone to anxiety in exposed places. The reward is a walk of genuine mountain character that takes you into the kind of terrain most Lake District and Snowdonia visitors only see from below.
