High Peak Trail Section Walk (Middleton Top)

The High Peak Trail follows a former railway line across open Derbyshire uplands, and this 9.7 km section from Middleton Top offers wide views, steady walking and a real sense of Peak District space without any steep climbing. The old railway bed creates a wide, level surface that makes for excellent distance walking at a consistent pace, while the surrounding landscape of limestone walls, sheep pastures and wide skies gives it genuine character. Despite 337 metres of cumulative elevation gain from gentle gradients, the walking never feels demanding. The Middleton Top engine house provides an interesting historical starting point.

Off-lead potential is moderate along the trail, and livestock risk is low on the trail itself though sheep graze in adjacent fields.
