Falling Foss and May Beck
North Yorkshire
Falling Foss is a beautiful 10-metre waterfall hidden in ancient woodland above May Beck in the North York Moors. This 3.2 km circular route follows the beck upstream through thick forest before arriving at the falls, passing the curious Hermit's Stone along the way — a boulder carved into a small dwelling by a Victorian stonemason. The woodland is dense and atmospheric, with the sound of running water accompanying most of the walk. Paths are generally good but can be uneven near the waterfall itself.
This dog friendly walk is a real treat for water-loving dogs, with May Beck providing constant access for paddling and drinking. The woodland paths offer fantastic scenting, and the relatively short distance means it suits dogs of most fitness levels. Off-lead potential is moderate through the forest sections, though leads are advisable near the waterfall edge where the ground drops steeply. Livestock risk is low throughout. The Falling Foss Tea Garden, set in a clearing near the falls, is a lovely dog-friendly stop for refreshments.
