Dalby Forest Ellerburn Trail

The Ellerburn Trail at Dalby Forest follows a 4 km circuit through mixed conifer and broadleaf woodland in the North York Moors, with a stream running through the valley bottom and the forest rising on both sides. The trail is well maintained by Forestry England, with the 120 m of climbing spread gently across undulating ground. The mix of tall spruce plantation and more open broadleaf sections gives the walk variety, and the stream crossing and riverside stretches add a different character to the woodland walking. The forest is managed as a working site but the trails feel peaceful and well established, with birdsong and the sound of moving water providing a constant soundtrack.

This is a dog friendly walk with excellent off-lead potential through the forest where livestock are largely absent. The woodland floor carries rich, layered scent from pine needle, damp earth and leaf litter, and the stream provides water access and the kind of investigation opportunities that keep dogs thoroughly engaged. The gentle, well-maintained paths suit dogs of all ages and fitness levels, from energetic youngsters to older dogs who prefer softer ground. The forest canopy provides shelter on wet days and shade in summer, making this a reliable option in most conditions. Parking and basic facilities are available at the Dalby Forest visitor centre. A proper woodland walk that delivers consistent quality without demanding much effort.
