Hadrian’s Wall to Sycamore Gap

Hadrian's Wall snakes across the Northumberland moorland at Steel Rigg, and this 4.8 km circuit follows its iconic stone ramparts toward the famous Sycamore Gap — the dramatic dip between two crags that became one of England's most photographed landscapes. The terrain is rolling and exposed, with the wall visible throughout and the vast Northumberland moorland stretching away on both sides. The path follows the Pennine Way, well maintained and easy to navigate, with 217 metres of elevation gain across the undulating crags giving the walk real physical reward for its modest distance.

This dog friendly walk combines history and wild moorland in a way few walks can match. The open ground and persistent moorland breeze create excellent conditions for dogs who enjoy exposed, stimulating environments. Off-lead potential is moderate on the moorland, though leads are needed near the wall where other visitors concentrate and through sections where sheep graze. Water is available from moorland streams. The walk is popular, particularly around the Gap, so early morning or winter visits offer more solitude. The Northumberland light makes this walk particularly rewarding in autumn and winter when the skies are dramatic.
