Longridge Fell from Jeffrey Hill

Longridge Fell rises above the Ribble Valley in Lancashire, and the approach from Jeffrey Hill gets you onto open fell quickly with wide views over the Forest of Bowland and across to the Pennines. The 11.3km circuit climbs steadily through enclosed farmland before breaking onto the broad, heathery summit ridge at around 350 metres, where the landscape opens up dramatically. The fell has a quiet, unfrequented character compared to the Lake District hills visible to the north, and on clear days the views extend from Pendle Hill to the Irish Sea. The terrain shifts from muddy farm tracks to firmer moorland paths as you gain height.

This is a satisfying dog friendly walk for owners who want proper hill exercise without a mountain expedition. The open summit ridge offers good space, though off-lead walking requires care as livestock grazing is common across much of the fell and the surrounding farmland. Leads are essential through the lower fields where sheep are almost always present. The moorland carries good scent and the heather provides interesting terrain for dogs to explore. Water sources are limited on the upper fell, so carry supplies. Jeffrey Hill car park is the most practical starting point. Best suited to dogs comfortable with sustained climbing and muddy conditions underfoot.
