Jubilee Tower and Darwen Moor Circular

Jubilee Tower stands on Darwen Moor above the Lancashire town of Darwen, and this 6.4 km circular climbs steadily through heather and gritstone terrain to its prominent position with wide views across Lancashire and the Pennines. The route follows broad, established tracks across open moorland, with 248 metres of elevation gain creating a properly physical walk. The exposed nature of the moor gives a strong sense of space and altitude, and the gritstone outcrops and heather-covered ground are characteristic of this stretch of the West Pennine Moors.

This dog friendly walk offers exhilarating open-air exercise on windswept moorland terrain. The heather, peat and gritstone provide rich scenting, and the wide views and fresh air create an environment that dogs find deeply stimulating. However, livestock density is high across the moor — sheep graze extensively throughout — so leads are essential across most of the route, limiting off-lead potential. The moorland paths can become boggy after rain, particularly in the lower sections, so waterproof boots are advisable. Despite the lead requirement, the concentrated climb and exposed summit make this a satisfying outing for active dogs.
