Lymm Dam and Woodland Loop
Cheshire
Lymm Dam sits at the edge of the pretty Cheshire village of Lymm, a small reservoir surrounded by mature woodland that creates a surprisingly peaceful pocket of green between Warrington and Altrincham. The 4km loop circles the dam before branching into surrounding woodland paths through beech, oak and birch, with the water visible through the trees for much of the circuit. Despite its modest length, the variety of scenery, open water, dense woodland, and the cascading weir at the dam wall, makes the walk feel satisfying rather than brief. The paths are well maintained and mostly level, with just 48 metres of climbing.
This compact dog friendly walk is popular with local dog owners for good reason. Off-lead potential is moderate, with good stretches through the quieter woodland sections, though the main dam path can be busy with joggers and families, particularly at weekends. The dam provides water access for dogs that want to paddle, and the woodland floor offers year-round scent interest in the leaf litter and undergrowth. Livestock risk is negligible. Parking is available at the Lymm Dam car park on Lakeside Road. The village of Lymm itself has several dog-friendly pubs and cafés along the Bridgewater Canal, making this an easy option for a combined walk and lunch outing.
