Lyndhurst Parish Circular (from Bolton’s Bench)

Bolton's Bench sits on the edge of Lyndhurst, the unofficial capital of the New Forest, and this 5.6km parish circular radiates outward across open lawns before dipping into ancient forest inclosures and returning via heathland. The open lawns give generous views across the forest's southern landscape, and the woodland sections reveal the characteristic New Forest mix of veteran oaks, hollies and beech alongside managed conifers. Free-roaming ponies and cattle graze the lawns and commons, giving the whole walk a distinctly timeless, pastoral character. Lyndhurst village anchors the route with the parish church and the excellent New Forest Heritage Centre within easy reach.

Off-lead potential on this dog friendly walk is moderate: the open lawns offer good space, but the free-roaming ponies and cattle that graze extensively across the commons mean leads should be kept close whenever livestock is present. The forest inclosure sections are more enclosed and require awareness of ground-nesting birds in spring and summer. Water access is available from forest streams along the route. Lyndhurst itself has numerous dog-friendly pubs and cafés, and the village green is typically dotted with grazing New Forest ponies, offering that quintessential forest experience. The lawns are particularly atmospheric in early morning light when the turf is still wet with dew and the ponies are silhouetted against the mist.
