Nidderdale Way Starter Loop (Pateley Bridge)

Pateley Bridge sits at the heart of Nidderdale, one of Yorkshire's quieter and less visited dales, and this 8km starter loop from the town gives an excellent taste of the valley's character. The route climbs from the town through pasture and woodland before contouring along the valley side with views across to Guisecliff and the moorland above, then drops back to the River Nidd for a riverside return. With 300 metres of ascent, the climbs are genuine but manageable, and the shifting terrain, from enclosed riverbank to open hillside, gives the walk a satisfying rhythm. Pateley Bridge itself has an old-fashioned market town charm with stone buildings and a strong independent spirit.

This is a rewarding dog friendly walk with the River Nidd providing excellent water access along the lower sections. Off-lead potential is limited as the route crosses livestock fields where sheep and cattle graze regularly, so leads should be kept on through the pastoral sections. The riverside stretches offer the best opportunities for dogs to paddle and drink, and the woodland sections provide shade and scent interest. The hillside paths can be muddy after rain, particularly through the winter months. Pateley Bridge has several dog-friendly pubs including the Crown Inn and the Royal Oak. The Nidderdale Museum in the town is worth a visit, and the walk combines well with a drive up to Scar House Reservoir for a longer day.
