Nottingham and Beeston Canal Five Mile Linear Walk

The Nottingham and Beeston Canal runs 8km between Beeston Lock and Nottingham Railway Station, following a straight, flat towpath through a mix of urban and semi-rural landscape. The canal was opened in 1796 to bypass a difficult stretch of the River Trent, and the walk passes through Beeston Marina, under brick bridges and alongside converted warehouses before entering the city centre. The towpath is wide, well-maintained and entirely level, with just 15 metres of elevation change across the full distance. Narrowboats, moorhens and the occasional heron provide constant waterside interest, and the canal has a quiet, unhurried character even as it approaches the city.

This straightforward dog friendly walk suits dogs of all ages and fitness levels on flat, easy ground. Off-lead potential is moderate on the quieter stretches away from locks and bridges, though the shared-use towpath means leads are sensible in busier sections near Beeston and central Nottingham. The canal provides constant visual interest but the banks are steep for water access in most places. Livestock is not a concern. The linear nature means you can turn back at any point or arrange transport from the far end. Cafés and pubs line the route at both ends, and the walk works well as a practical way to combine exercise with errands in town. Beeston Lock has parking and facilities at the marina end.
