Rievaulx Abbey to Helmsley Loop

North Yorkshire

Dog Friendly Rating: 7/10 A rewarding circuit linking the atmospheric ruins of Rievaulx Abbey with the market town of Helmsley; livestock in the farmland sections require leads.

This 9.7km loop connects two of the finest historical sites on the North York Moors western edge: the atmospheric ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, a 12th-century Cistercian monastery set deep in its wooded valley, and the market town of Helmsley with its medieval castle. The route follows the valley of the River Rye through mixed woodland, climbing to Rievaulx Terrace where the 18th-century landscaped viewpoint gives one of Yorkshire's most celebrated vistas down to the abbey ruins. The return crosses farmland and drops through Duncombe Park, a grand estate with ancient trees and sweeping parkland. With 379 metres of ascent, the terrain is genuinely hilly with satisfying ups and downs.

This is a rewarding dog friendly walk that combines rich history with varied countryside. Off-lead potential is moderate through the woodland sections, though leads are needed in Duncombe Park where deer roam and through the farmland where livestock is present. The River Rye provides water access in the valley, and the woodland floor carries rich scent from leaf litter, wild garlic in spring, and damp earth. The paths can be muddy after rain, particularly on the descent into Rievaulx. Helmsley has excellent dog-friendly pubs including the Feversham Arms and the Star Inn at Harome nearby. Dogs are not permitted in the abbey ruins or on Rievaulx Terrace itself. Parking is available in Helmsley's market square.
