Oxford Canal: Thrupp to Kidlington

The Oxford Canal between Thrupp and Kidlington follows 6.4km of towpath through Oxfordshire countryside where the narrow waterway winds past farmland, under stone bridges and through a landscape that feels properly rural despite being minutes from Oxford. Thrupp is a tiny hamlet of canal cottages clustered around the waterside, and the walk heads north along the towpath past moored narrowboats, reed-fringed margins and the open fields beyond. The canal was completed in 1790 and retains its original narrow, winding course, quite different from the later, straighter ship canals. The going is entirely flat with just 22 metres of elevation change.

This is a relaxed dog friendly walk that suits dogs of all ages on easy, level ground. Off-lead potential is moderate on the quieter stretches, though the shared towpath means leads are sensible near locks, bridges and where other walkers and cyclists pass. The canal provides constant visual interest but the banks can be steep for water access in places. Livestock may graze the adjacent fields. The Jolly Boatman at Thrupp and the Boat Inn at Kidlington both welcome dogs and make natural start or finish points. The linear nature means you can turn back at any point or arrange the full 12.9km return. A dependable, easy walk with genuine countryside character on Oxford's doorstep.
