Padley Gorge and Longshaw Estate
The Peak District
Padley Gorge is a narrow, boulder-strewn valley cut by the Burbage Brook through gritstone bedrock in the eastern Peak District, clothed in ancient sessile oak and birch that has grown here since at least the medieval period. This 7km circular from the Longshaw Estate crosses open heathland before plunging into the gorge for a streamside walk among moss-covered rocks and small waterfalls, emerging at Grindleford Station before climbing back through woodland to the Longshaw parkland. Pied flycatchers nest in the gorge canopy from spring, and the whole place has a primeval, green-lit atmosphere that feels like stepping into a different climate zone.
The dog experience on this dog friendly walk is outstanding. Burbage Brook runs reliably year-round with wade-in access at multiple points, and the ancient oakwood carries a rich, complex scent of wet moss, cold stone and damp leaf litter. Off-lead potential is moderate within the gorge itself, though leads are required across the Longshaw Estate where cattle graze the open heath. The rocky gorge terrain has steep-sided banks and slippery boulders, so this suits sure-footed dogs comfortable on uneven ground. Water access is constant through the gorge section. The Grindleford Station café at the bottom serves famously generous portions and welcomes dogs outside. A walk that delivers genuine wildness within easy reach of Sheffield.

Frequently Asked Questions
Padley Gorge and Longshaw Estate earns a 9/10 dog-friendly rating, and it's easy to see why. Burbage Brook runs through the gorge year-round with plenty of spots for dogs to wade in, the ancient oakwood offers an incredible sensory experience of wet moss and cold stone, and the Grindleford Station café welcomes dogs outside midway through the walk. It's a genuinely wild-feeling route that most dogs absolutely love.
Off-lead potential is moderate on this walk. Within the gorge itself there's reasonable freedom, but leads are required across the Longshaw Estate where cattle graze the open heathland. It's worth keeping that in mind when planning, particularly if your dog is easily distracted by livestock.
The gorge terrain is the main thing to be aware of , steep-sided banks and slippery, boulder-strewn ground mean this walk suits dogs that are confident and sure-footed on uneven surfaces. The 7km circular route starts from Longshaw Estate Woodcroft Car Park (S11 7TZ) and includes open heathland, a streamside gorge section, and a return through woodland, so it's a varied outing with a decent amount of scrambling. Facilities are good, with cafés and toilets at both the start and midway point at Grindleford Station.
