River Skell Riverside Walk

The River Skell rises near Fountains Abbey and flows through Ripon, and this 4km circuit follows its banks on gentle paths that feel surprisingly peaceful for a walk starting so close to the city centre. The route traces the river through mature trees, open grassy banks and quiet residential fringes before looping back through Ripon's outskirts. The Skell is a modest stream here, clear and shallow, but the tree-lined corridor creates a green, enclosed world that shuts out the town remarkably effectively. With 124 metres of gentle climbing, the walk has enough undulation to feel worthwhile without being challenging.

This is a handy dog friendly walk for a quick but rewarding outing near Ripon. Off-lead potential is moderate on the quieter stretches, though leads are sensible where the path runs near roads and through areas where livestock may be present in the fields alongside. The river provides water access for paddling and drinking at several points, and the tree-lined banks carry good scent from leaf litter and riverside vegetation. The paths can be muddy after rain. Ripon itself has excellent dog-friendly pubs and cafés around the market square, and the walk can be extended towards Fountains Abbey for a much longer day. Parking is available in the city centre. A useful everyday walk that serves Ripon locals well.
