Paxton Pits Nature Reserve
Lincolnshire
Paxton Pits Nature Reserve occupies former gravel workings along the Great Ouse valley near Little Paxton in Cambridgeshire, now transformed into a wetland complex of large lakes, reed beds and riverside meadow. The 6.4km circuit extends beyond the reserve to follow the River Great Ouse along its bank, through grassland to the village of Diddington and back across open pasture. The reserve is one of the county's finest birdwatching sites, with common terns breeding on the lake islands in summer and bitterns overwintering in the reed beds. The landscape is flat and open, with big Fenland skies and the constant presence of water.
This is a varied dog friendly walk with moderate off-lead potential on the quieter paths away from the main visitor areas and nesting zones. The River Great Ouse provides good swimming access in the calmer stretches, running cleaner here than in the slower sections further south. The reserve paths are well maintained on gravel, though the field sections can be soft after rain. Livestock risk is low. The flat terrain suits dogs of all ages and fitness levels, and the constantly changing waterside environment keeps noses busy throughout. Little Paxton car park provides easy access, and the village has the Anchor pub nearby. A walk that rewards patient observation as much as physical exercise.
