Moel Famau Circular from Loggerheads Country Park

Moel Famau stands at 554 metres at the northern end of the Clwydian Range, and this 8km circuit from Loggerheads Country Park climbs through the wooded Alyn Valley before breaking onto open hillside for the final ascent to the Jubilee Tower ruins on the summit. The lower valley is sheltered and green, with limestone outcrops and the River Alyn cutting through a narrow gorge, while the upper slopes are open heather and grass with panoramic views across the Vale of Clwyd to Snowdonia. The contrast between enclosed woodland and exposed hilltop gives the walk a satisfying sense of journey. With 493 metres of ascent, this is a proper climb that earns its views.

This dog friendly walk suits active dogs that enjoy woodland and hill terrain in combination. Off-lead potential is limited on the lower sections where livestock grazes the fields between Loggerheads and the open hill, and care is needed on the summit ridge where the ground drops away on the western side. The woodland provides shade and shelter on the climb, with the river offering water access in the valley. The upper hillside is exposed and can be very windy, so wrap up in winter. Loggerheads Country Park has good parking, a visitor centre and a café that welcomes dogs outside. The Jubilee Tower at the summit, built for George III's golden jubilee, was never completed and its atmospheric ruins add character to the hilltop.
