Pen y Fan and Corn Du

Pen y Fan at 886 metres is the highest peak in South Wales, and the standard route from Pont ar Daf car park climbs steadily through moorland to the twin summits of Corn Du and Pen y Fan across 6.4km with 493 metres of ascent. The underlying Old Red Sandstone creates a landscape of dramatic ridges and glacial cwms, and the exposed summit plateau can feel genuinely alpine despite the modest elevation. On clear days the views extend across the Beacons range to the Cotswolds and the Welsh coast. The path is well-worn and straightforward in good visibility, though the upper mountain is a different proposition in cloud. Summer weekends bring crowds, but the landscape retains a wild, muscular character regardless.

This is a proper mountain dog friendly walk that demands respect for conditions. The approach crosses moorland where sheep graze, so leads are essential on the lower slopes. Off-lead potential improves on the open summit plateau, though the exposed ridge is narrow in places and close control is needed near the steep cwm edges. Water is scarce above the initial streams, so carry plenty for the climb. The summit weather can deteriorate rapidly with wind, rain and reduced visibility arriving without much warning. Pont ar Daf car park has basic facilities and fills early on busy days. Best suited to fit dogs comfortable with sustained climbing and exposed ground. The nearby village of Libanus offers limited post-walk amenities.
