Roseberry Topping and Newton Wood

Roseberry Topping is one of North Yorkshire's most distinctive hills, its half-collapsed summit creating a jagged profile that has earned it the nickname "Yorkshire's Matterhorn." This compact 4km circuit from Newton under Roseberry climbs through Newton Wood, an ancient woodland of oak and birch on the hill's lower slopes, before breaking onto open hillside for the final steep pull to the 320-metre summit. The views from the top are enormous: the Cleveland Plain, the North York Moors, the Tees estuary and, on clear days, the Durham coast. With 207 metres of concentrated ascent, the climb is short but steep and the summit approach is rocky and eroded in places.

This is a brilliant short dog friendly walk that packs real hill character into a compact distance. Off-lead potential is moderate through Newton Wood, though leads are needed on the open hillside where livestock grazes and on the steep summit approach where the eroded path requires careful footing. The woodland floor carries rich scent from leaf litter and bluebells in spring, and the exposed summit gives dogs a sensory blast of moorland wind from every direction. Water sources are limited, so carry a supply. The Great Ayton road provides parking at the base. The Royal Oak in Great Ayton welcomes dogs for post-walk refreshments. A walk that proves you don't need distance for a genuine summit experience.
