Stanborough Park

Stanborough Park occupies 126 acres of former gravel workings in Welwyn Garden City, with two large lakes surrounded by mature woodland and open grassland. The 4.8km circuit follows surfaced and unsurfaced paths around both lakes, with water visible throughout and the surrounding trees creating a surprisingly green, enclosed world within the town. The north lake is used for sailing and watersports, while the south lake is quieter and more naturalistic, attracting wildfowl year-round. The woodland sections between the lakes provide shade and a different character to the open waterside paths. The terrain is entirely flat with just 18 metres of elevation change.

This is a practical and enjoyable dog friendly walk that suits dogs of all ages on easy, accessible paths. Off-lead potential is moderate, with the quieter south lake paths allowing more freedom than the busier north lake circuit. The lakes provide swimming access at multiple points for water-loving dogs, and the woodland floor carries good scent from leaf litter and undergrowth. Livestock risk is negligible. The surfaced paths make this a reliable all-weather option, and the park has a café, toilets and good parking facilities. A straightforward walk that combines waterside interest with woodland variety, and serves Welwyn Garden City's dog owners well as a regular local outing.
