Nagshead Nature Reserve Trails

Nagshead Nature Reserve occupies a quiet corner of the Forest of Dean, managed by the RSPB for its breeding population of pied flycatchers and wood warblers. The 4.8km circuit follows well-maintained trails through mature oak woodland, with the canopy closing overhead to create a green, enclosed world that feels distinctly calmer than the forest's busier trails. The woodland floor is thick with bluebells in spring, and the bird activity in the canopy from April to July is exceptional. With just 107 metres of climbing, this is gentle walking on soft, well-drained paths.

This is a lovely dog friendly walk for a relaxed outing in atmospheric woodland. Off-lead potential is moderate, with good stretches on the quieter trails away from the main visitor area. Dogs should be kept under close control during spring and summer nesting season when ground-nesting birds are vulnerable. The woodland floor carries rich scent year-round from leaf litter, fungi and damp earth, and the mature oaks provide reliable shade on warm days. Livestock risk is minimal. The reserve car park has basic facilities, and the wider Forest of Dean offers plenty of extension options. Parkend village is nearby with the Fountain Inn welcoming dogs. A peaceful walk best appreciated by those who enjoy birdwatching alongside their dog walking.
