Rufford Abbey and Sherwood Heath Circular

Rufford Abbey Country Park combines the atmospheric ruins of a 12th-century Cistercian abbey with 150 acres of parkland, formal gardens, a lake and mature woodland in the heart of Nottinghamshire. The 4.8km circuit takes in the abbey ruins with their Gothic arches and carved stonework, a sculpture trail through the gardens, the lake with its resident waterbirds, and woodland paths through the wider estate. The park strikes a balance between managed and natural, with the formal areas giving way to wilder woodland on the outer paths. Just 33 metres of climbing keeps everything gentle and accessible.

This is a relaxed dog friendly walk with moderate off-lead potential in the woodland areas away from the formal gardens. Dogs should be kept on leads near the abbey ruins, sculpture trail and main visitor areas. The lake provides visual interest and the woodland floor carries good scent from leaf litter and undergrowth. Livestock risk is low. The park has a café with outdoor seating, toilets and a shop, and the facilities are well maintained. Parking is available at the main car park. The mix of historical features and natural landscape provides enough variety to keep both dogs and owners engaged on a short circuit. A good option for a gentle morning or afternoon outing in the Nottinghamshire countryside.
