Pewsey White Horse and Wansdyke Circular

This 14.5km circuit from Pewsey climbs to the Pewsey White Horse, a chalk hill figure carved in 1937, before following the broad, open chalk downland along sections of the ancient Wansdyke earthwork, a post-Roman defensive ditch that runs for miles across the Wiltshire hills. The route traverses high, quiet ground with sweeping views over the Vale of Pewsey, one of the most beautiful lowland landscapes in southern England, with the Kennet and Avon Canal glinting in the valley below. The downland turf is springy and cropped, dotted with wildflowers in summer, and the Wansdyke itself is a subtle but constant companion, its raised bank and ditch still clearly visible after fifteen hundred years. With 302 metres of steady climbing, this is a proper day's walking.

Off-lead potential on this dog friendly walk is limited as livestock grazes the downland, so leads should be kept on across the open sections where cattle and sheep are present. The chalk paths are firm and well-drained, providing reliable footing even in wet weather. Water sources are scarce on the high ground, so carry a supply for the distance. The exposed downland catches wind and offers no shelter, so dress accordingly in winter. Pewsey village has several dog-friendly pubs and cafés for post-walk refreshments, and the Kennet and Avon Canal towpath in the valley makes a gentler alternative if conditions are poor on the hill. A walk that rewards with history, views and genuine distance.
