Puzzlewood and Perrygrove Woodland Walk

The woodland around Puzzlewood and Perrygrove in the Forest of Dean is among the most atmospheric in England, a landscape of mossy boulders, twisted tree roots and deep hollows created by ancient iron ore mining that has been reclaimed by nature over centuries. This 4.8km circuit weaves through dense forest where the canopy closes overhead and the ground is carpeted with ferns, moss and leaf litter. Puzzlewood itself is a privately owned attraction (entry fee applies), but the surrounding forest trails are freely accessible and share the same otherworldly character. The terrain undulates gently with just 51 metres of climbing, and the enclosed, green-lit atmosphere makes the walk feel immersive regardless of weather.

Off-lead potential on this dog friendly walk is limited as the narrow, winding paths and occasional other walkers make close control sensible, and Puzzlewood itself requires dogs on leads. The forest floor is exceptionally rich in scent, with ancient leaf litter, fungi and the damp mineral smell of old iron workings creating a complex sensory environment for dogs. The twisted roots and mossy rocks add interest to the terrain underfoot. Livestock risk is low within the forest. The paths can be slippery when wet, particularly on the steeper sections. Parking is available at Puzzlewood or at nearby forest car parks. The surrounding Forest of Dean trails connect for longer outings. A unique walk that feels like stepping into a different world.
