Thetford Forest Brandon Country Park Circuit

Brandon Country Park sits on the edge of Thetford Forest where the Suffolk-Norfolk border runs through the Brecks, and this 8.9 km circuit moves from the park's landscaped grounds into the vast forest beyond with barely a transition. The Brecks landscape is unlike anywhere else in lowland England — dry sandy soil, twisted Scots pine, open clearings and a distinctively arid character that feels more like a northern European forest than the English countryside. The route follows well-surfaced forest tracks through endless pine corridors, crossing sandy clearings where the light breaks through and passing the arboretum near the start. At just 25 metres of total elevation gain, this is flat walking on good paths that covers ground quickly.

This is an outstanding dog friendly walk with high off-lead potential and low livestock risk, making it one of the most relaxed outings in the region. The scent environment is remarkable — pine resin and dry sand dominate, with rabbit scent everywhere underfoot from the warrens that riddle every clearing. Dogs with stamina can cover these well-surfaced tracks at pace, while the forest scale means you can walk for miles without retracing your steps. The arboretum provides shade and structure for a gentler start, while the forest beyond delivers proper wilderness character. The on-site visitor centre has toilets and a cafe. This is a strong choice for dogs who need distance and freedom rather than dramatic terrain.
