Studland Beach to Old Harry Rocks
Dorset
This 8km circuit from Studland Beach follows the South West Coast Path to Old Harry Rocks, the dramatic chalk sea stacks that mark the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast. The route climbs from the beach through the National Trust's Studland heathland, a rare lowland heath habitat, before following the cliff tops to the chalk headland where Old Harry and his Wife stand isolated in the sea. The return crosses open downland with views across Studland Bay, Poole Harbour and the Isle of Purbeck. The chalk cliffs are brilliant white against the blue sea, and the whole headland has a dramatic, windswept character. With just 87 metres of climbing, the walk is surprisingly accessible.
Off-lead potential on this dog friendly walk is moderate on the heathland and cliff-top sections, though leads are essential near the cliff edges where the chalk can crumble without warning, and through the farmland where livestock grazes the downland. The beach at Studland provides excellent sand and sea access for dogs, making it worth arriving early or staying late for a swim. The coastal wind carries strong salt scent, and the heathland adds gorse and heather to the mix. Studland Beach has dog restrictions in some sections during summer, so check before visiting. The Bankes Arms at Studland welcomes dogs. National Trust parking is available at Knoll Beach or Middle Beach. One of Dorset's most iconic coastal walks.
