Tolkien Trail (Hurst Green Circular)

The Tolkien Trail from Hurst Green follows a 9.7 km circular through the Ribble Valley, linking riverside paths along the River Hodder with farmland and pockets of ancient woodland in a landscape that reportedly inspired J.R.R. Tolkien during his visits to nearby Stonyhurst College. The route passes through the grounds of Cromwell's Bridge, climbs through mixed woodland with bluebells in spring, and crosses open pasture with views toward Longridge Fell and the Forest of Bowland. The 124 metres of elevation gain comes in gentle stages, and the terrain shifts constantly between soft riverside paths, muddy field crossings and firmer woodland tracks. Hurst Green itself is a handsome village with the Shireburn Arms providing a natural start and finish point.

This dog friendly walk requires leads through most sections due to moderate livestock presence — sheep and cattle graze the farmland that the trail crosses, and stiles between fields need careful navigation with larger dogs. The riverside stretches along the Hodder are the highlight for dogs, with accessible banks for drinking and wading where the water runs clear and shallow over stones. The woodland floor carries rich scent from damp earth, leaf litter and the sweet decay of fallen timber, and the variety of terrain keeps dogs mentally engaged throughout. The Shireburn Arms in Hurst Green welcomes dogs and makes a strong post-walk stop for the Ribble Valley ales.
