Shotover Country Park

Shotover Country Park covers 300 acres of hilltop woodland, heathland and open grassland east of Oxford, its elevated position giving views across the city's dreaming spires and the Thames Valley beyond. The park combines ancient woodland with Victorian plantation and areas of open heath that create unusual habitat variety for a single site, with the terrain shifting constantly between dense forest, open rides and breezy grassland. The hilltop location means wind is always present and the scent carries differently to lowland walking. With 95 metres of climbing, the undulations are gentle but keep the walk interesting across the 4.8km circuit.

This is a varied dog friendly walk with moderate off-lead potential across the open heath and quieter woodland paths. The ancient woodland sections are dense with scent from leaf litter, fungi and damp earth, while the heathland provides running space and lighter, more open terrain. Livestock risk is low. The variety of habitat in a compact area means dogs experience multiple environments without covering long distances. The park can be muddy in the woodland sections after rain. Parking is available at the main Shotover car park off Old Road. Oxford is a short drive with numerous dog-friendly pubs. A surprisingly wild feeling walk for somewhere so close to a major city.
