Shugborough Estate Outer Trails

Shugborough Estate sits at the confluence of the River Sow and the River Trent in Staffordshire, a National Trust property with a grand neo-classical mansion surrounded by 900 acres of parkland, woodland and farmland. The 6.4km outer trails extend beyond the formal gardens through open parkland with mature specimen trees, along the riverside and through the estate's working farm. The landscape has a spacious, elegant character with long sightlines across manicured lawns and gently rolling pasture, and the rivers add a constant waterside element. The Essex Bridge, a 16th-century packhorse bridge over the Trent, is one of the finest in England and sits on the route.

Off-lead potential on this dog friendly walk is limited as livestock grazes the estate parkland and dogs must be kept under close control. The wide, well-maintained paths suit dogs of all ages and fitness levels, and the riverside sections provide visual interest and some water access where the banks allow. The estate has a café, shop and good facilities, all welcoming dogs outside. The formal gardens are not open to dogs, but the outer trails provide more than enough distance and variety. Parking is available at the main estate car park. The walk combines cultural interest with gentle countryside, and the Essex Bridge is worth pausing at. A polished, easy outing in well-managed Staffordshire parkland.
