Tunstall Forest Circuit

Tunstall Forest sits on the Suffolk coast between Orford and Snape, and this 6.4 km circuit follows waymarked trails through mature pine and mixed woodland that stays genuinely uncrowded even in peak summer. The paths thread between dense conifer plantation and lighter broadleaf sections, breaking into clearings where the quality of light changes completely and the sky opens above the trees. The going is flat — just 22 metres of total gain — and the well-surfaced trails drain quickly on the sandy Sandlings soil, making this a reliable walk in almost any weather. The forest has a quiet, contemplative character quite different from the busier Rendlesham or Thetford plantations, and the proximity to the coast means salt air sometimes mixes with the pine resin on easterly winds.

This is an excellent dog friendly walk with high off-lead potential and low livestock risk, giving dogs genuine freedom to range and explore without anxiety. The scent environment shifts constantly as trails move between pine plantation and mixed woodland — resinous needle beds give way to damper broadleaf litter rich with fungi and earth. The clearings offer space for dogs to open up their pace before the canopy closes in again. Fallen timber and undergrowth provide continuous investigation opportunities for scent-driven dogs. The flat, well-drained paths suit dogs of all ages and fitness levels, and the forest scale means you can extend the route significantly without retracing your steps.
