Twyford to Hockley Viaduct Loop

The Twyford to Hockley Viaduct loop follows the River Itchen through water meadows on a 6.4 km circuit that feels properly rural despite sitting just south of Winchester. The route traces the river through classic chalk-stream landscape — crystal-clear water flowing over gravel beds through manicured meadows — before reaching the striking Hockley Viaduct, a 33-arch Victorian brick structure that spans the valley with considerable presence. The 89 metres of climbing is gentle and spread across the circuit, and the paths are generally level though sections become waterlogged after heavy rain when the meadows flood. The Itchen is one of England's finest chalk streams, and the clarity of the water and the quality of the meadow management give this walk a distinctly cared-for character.

This dog friendly walk has limited off-lead potential despite the open meadow setting, as moderate livestock presence in the water meadows requires leads through much of the route. The river provides excellent water access at numerous points — the Itchen runs shallow and clear over chalk gravel, perfect for dogs to wade and drink. The meadow grass and waterside vegetation carry rich scent, particularly in the warmer months when wildflowers and water mint add aromatic layers. The terrain suits dogs of all fitness levels, though muddy boots should be expected in winter and spring. The proximity to Winchester means dog-friendly pubs and cafes are within easy reach after the walk.
