Uffington White Horse and Dragon Hill

Wiltshire

Dog Friendly Rating: 9/10 A Ridgeway walk to the prehistoric Uffington White Horse with Dragon Hill and sweeping Vale of White Horse views below.

The Valley of Rocks sits just west of Lynton on the North Devon coast, a dramatic dry valley flanked by jagged rock formations rising above the Bristol Channel. This 4.8 km coastal loop follows the cliff path through the valley with its towering pinnacles — Castle Rock, Rugged Jack and the Devil's Cheesewring — before climbing onto the headland and returning along the coast path with views across to the Welsh coast. The 115 metres of elevation gain comes in short, sharp bursts on rocky paths, and the exposed cliff sections add a sense of drama that belies the modest distance. Feral goats roam the valley and are a regular sight among the rock formations, adding an unexpected wildness to proceedings.

This dog friendly walk offers moderate off-lead potential on the open headland sections, though leads are essential near the cliff edges and around the feral goats who hold their ground with confidence. The coastal exposure means scent from salt spray, gorse and heather mixes with the mineral smell of the rock formations, and the wind off the Bristol Channel carries constantly. The terrain suits agile, confident dogs comfortable on rocky paths — the ascents are steep in places and the cliff-edge sections require careful management. The valley itself provides some shelter from the prevailing westerlies, but the headland beyond is fully exposed. Lynton and Lynmouth below offer dog-friendly refreshment stops, and the cliff railway between the two is worth the diversion.
