Slieve Donard from Bloody Bridge
Northern Ireland
Slieve Donard is Northern Ireland's highest mountain at 850 metres, and the Bloody Bridge route follows the river upstream through open moorland before a sustained climb to the granite summit along the Mourne Wall, the remarkable dry-stone boundary that runs across the entire mountain range. This 12.1km circuit is a serious mountain day with 857 metres of ascent, climbing from sea level to the summit through terrain that shifts from riverside heath to exposed boulder-strewn mountainside. The views from the top extend across the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man, Scotland and the Wicklow Mountains. The Mourne Wall provides both navigation aid and shelter on the exposed summit ridge.
This is one of the finest dog friendly walks in Northern Ireland for fit, experienced mountain dogs. The lower moorland section following the Bloody Bridge river is superb for off-lead running, with heather, bog and mountain stream crossings that most dogs find irresistible. Higher up, the terrain becomes rockier and more exposed, and leads are sensible on the steepest sections. The mountain streams provide excellent cold water throughout the ascent. Livestock is present on the lower moorland slopes, so leads are needed through grazing areas. The summit is exposed to severe weather from every direction, so full mountain kit is essential. Bloody Bridge car park on the A2 coast road provides access. Newcastle town is nearby with numerous dog-friendly pubs. Not suitable for unfit, elderly or nervous dogs.

Slieve Donard via Bloody Bridge earns a strong 9/10 for dog friendliness, making it one of the finest mountain walks in Northern Ireland for dogs. The route has a lot going for it , open moorland, mountain streams to splash in, and a proper adventure to the summit of Northern Ireland's highest peak. That said, it's a serious 12.1km mountain day with 857 metres of ascent, so it's best suited to fit, experienced dogs rather than elderly or nervous ones.
The lower moorland section along the Bloody Bridge river is brilliant for off-lead running, with heather, bog and stream crossings that dogs tend to love. Leads are needed through any grazing areas on the lower slopes where livestock is present, and it's sensible to keep dogs on lead on the steepest, most exposed sections higher up the mountain. The Mourne Wall guides you to the summit, but the terrain up there is rocky and the weather can be severe, so control is important.
This is a genuine mountain route , 12.1km with 857 metres of ascent from sea level to the 850-metre summit , so full mountain kit is essential for both you and your dog, as the summit is exposed to weather from all directions. The mountain streams provide a good water source throughout the climb, but there are no other facilities on route. Parking is free at Bloody Bridge car park on the A2 coast road, and if you need a post-walk pint, Newcastle town nearby has several dog-friendly pubs.
