Worcestershire Beacon and Malvern Hills Ridge
Worcestershire
Worcestershire Beacon stands at 425 metres as the highest point of the Malvern Hills, and the 11.3 km ridge circuit from British Camp is one of the most rewarding hill walks in the English Midlands. The Malverns rise suddenly from the surrounding Severn plain like a miniature mountain range, their ancient Precambrian granite creating steep eastern slopes and a narrow, exposed ridge with 360-degree views across Worcestershire, Herefordshire and into Wales. The 648 metres of total climbing is significant — the repeated ascents along the ridge add up — and the terrain is rough in places with loose rock, exposed granite and steep drops on the eastern face. The sense of elevation is extraordinary for the actual height, as the abrupt rise from flat farmland amplifies the feeling of being on a proper mountain.
This dog friendly walk has limited off-lead potential due to moderate livestock presence on the hillside grassland, and leads are essential on the steepest sections where drops are significant. The exposed ridge carries scent differently to lowland walking — wind is constant, gorse and bracken dominate, and the rabbit population keeps noses working across every section. The terrain demands reasonable fitness and confidence on rough ground from both dog and walker. The views are the reward: on clear days, the panorama from Worcestershire Beacon encompasses the Black Mountains, the Cotswolds, the Brecon Beacons and the Shropshire hills. British Camp — the Iron Age hillfort at the southern end — provides a dramatic start and finish. Toilets are available at the car park.

Frequently Asked Questions
Worcestershire Beacon and the Malvern Hills ridge walk scores 9 out of 10 for dog friendliness, making it one of the better options in the region for walkers with dogs. The 11.3 km circuit from British Camp offers an extraordinary day out, with a cafe and toilets at the car park to help with the practicalities.
Off-lead potential is limited here due to moderate livestock presence on the hillside grassland, so you'll need to be prepared to keep your dog on the lead across much of the route. Leads are also essential on the steepest sections, where the drops on the eastern face are significant , that said, the ridge is rich with scent from gorse, bracken and a busy rabbit population, so dogs tend to find it thoroughly engaging regardless.
This is a genuinely challenging walk with 648 metres of total climbing, rough terrain, loose rock and exposed granite, so both you and your dog will need a reasonable level of fitness and confidence on uneven ground. The ridge is open and exposed, meaning wind is a near-constant companion, and the steep eastern slopes demand care. Parking is available at British Camp car park (charged), and there's a cafe and toilets on site when you're done.
