Tatton Park Outer Estate Walk

Cheshire

Dog Friendly Rating: 8/10 A loop around the outer estate at Tatton Park with deer, parkland views and the grand house as a backdrop.

Tatton Park is a National Trust estate of over 1,000 acres near Knutsford in Cheshire, with a grand neo-classical mansion surrounded by deer parkland, formal gardens and a large mere. The 6.4km outer estate walk follows wide parkland paths and tree-lined avenues through open grassland where herds of fallow and red deer graze beneath ancient oaks. The landscape was designed by Humphry Repton and has a spacious, elegant character with long views across the park to Tatton Mere and the Cheshire plain beyond. The terrain is entirely flat with just 38 metres of climbing, and the paths are well maintained throughout.

Off-lead potential on this dog friendly walk is limited as the estate's deer herds roam the parkland and dogs must be kept on leads at all times within the park to protect them. The wide paths suit dogs of all ages and fitness levels, and the parkland carries the scent of ancient trees and the deer themselves. The mere provides visual interest and birdwatching opportunities. The formal gardens are not open to dogs. Tatton Park has good facilities including a café and restaurant, both welcoming dogs outside. Parking is available at the main estate car parks, with an entry fee for vehicles. The autumn colours in the parkland are exceptional. Knutsford is a short drive with numerous dog-friendly pubs and cafés.

The wide, well-maintained parkland paths are flat with minimal climbing, and there's a café and restaurant on site where dogs are welcome outside. Do note that the formal gardens are not open to dogs, so your walk is focused on the outer estate loop.

Unfortunately, off-lead walking isn't permitted anywhere within the park.
