South West Coast Path: St Ives to Zennor
Cornwall
The stretch of South West Coast Path between St Ives and Zennor is one of the most dramatic and demanding sections of the entire 630-mile trail. This 10.5km route hugs the granite coastline almost the entire way, with constant Atlantic views, rocky headlands, hidden coves and the wild moorland of the Penwith peninsula pressing in from above. The terrain is relentlessly undulating with 594 metres of cumulative ascent as the path climbs and drops between headlands, crossing boulder fields and navigating narrow cliff-edge sections. The landscape has an ancient, elemental quality: granite, heather, sea and sky, with the Neolithic field patterns visible on the moorland above.
This is a challenging dog friendly walk that demands a fit, sure-footed dog comfortable with rough, rocky terrain and exposure to Atlantic weather. Off-lead potential is limited near the cliff edges where drops are sheer and unfenced, though the moorland sections further from the edge are more relaxed. Livestock risk is low along the coast path. The sea is visible constantly but beach access is limited to a few steep cove descents. Carry plenty of water as sources are scarce along the exposed coast. The Tinners Arms in Zennor is one of Cornwall's finest dog-friendly pubs and makes the perfect finish point. The return can be made by bus along the B3306 or via the inland path over the moor. A walk that rewards serious effort with serious scenery.

Frequently Asked Questions
This stretch of the South West Coast Path scores a strong 9/10 for dog friendliness, and it's a genuinely rewarding route for dogs who love wild, open landscapes. Livestock risk is low along the coast path, and the Tinners Arms in Zennor , the natural finish point , is one of Cornwall's finest dog-friendly pubs. That said, it's best suited to fit, sure-footed dogs who are comfortable with rough, rocky terrain and exposed Atlantic conditions.
Off-lead opportunities are somewhat limited near the cliff edges, where drops are sheer and unfenced, so dogs that are prone to bolting or difficult to recall should be kept on the lead in those sections. The moorland sections further back from the cliff edge are more relaxed and offer more freedom. Overall, a reliable recall and good trail manners will make for a much more enjoyable walk here.
This is a challenging 10.5km route with 594 metres of cumulative ascent, boulder fields and narrow cliff-edge sections, so it really is best reserved for fit, experienced dogs rather than puppies or older dogs with mobility issues. Water sources are scarce along the exposed coast, so carrying plenty for your dog is essential. Parking is available at paid car parks in St Ives or a £2 honesty box car park in Zennor, and if you'd rather not retrace your steps, a bus runs back along the B3306.
